Cat Genset is a specialist page of USP&E, the power generation company that designs, builds and operates power stations. It exists for owners whose Cat sets work but whose switchgear, protection and controls have not kept pace with the plant.
Behind the page sit 400+ engineers and project managers, ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certification, and six offices across the USA, Africa, the UK and China.
A short introduction to USP&E
USP&E is a company that supplies and builds power. It sources equipment, designs plants, delivers them as EPC or EPCM contracts and then operates them. It works in the USA, Africa, the UK, the UAE and China, and its offices are listed at the bottom of this page. The people on this site are the same engineers who write protection studies for mines and commission plants for hyperscale developers.

The electrical story of a Cat plant
Where plants quietly lose reliability
A Cat engine can be sound while the plant around it drifts. Load sharing is tuned for a different load. Protection relays are set for a smaller bus. Metering cannot prove what the plant delivered last month. Those faults do not show on a dyno, so they surface as trips.
Cat Genset treats the plant as a system. Our engineers review load-share logic, relay coordination, harmonic content, transformer ratings and synchronising checks, then recommend the smallest set of changes that restores margin.

Build a simple study of load, fault levels and protection.
List fixes by cost and risk, with a path to hybrid or turbine capacity.
What we look for in a Cat switchroom
Open the cabinet and the plant tells its history. A tidy panel with labelled relays, recent settings records and a current single-line drawing suggests a plant that is looked after. A panel with handwritten notes, tripped indicators and three generations of relays suggests the opposite, and it hints at where nuisance trips will come from.
Our engineers check sync-check relays, metering accuracy, harmonic filters, transformer loading and neutral grounding. For campus work they also look at switchgear space, because a plant that cannot add a breaker cannot add a turbine.
Outputs of a review
- Settings book: relay and controller settings, signed and dated.
- Single-line drawing: current and as-found.
- Risk list: ranked by cost and consequence.
- Upgrade path: optional hybrid or turbine integration.
A word on safety
Electrical work is where plant safety is won. Arc flash studies, neutral grounding and clear labelling reduce risk for the people who open the cabinets. Our ISO 45001 system covers site work, and our engineers brief clients on the arc-flash boundary before any panel is touched.

What does USP&E stand for?
USP&E is the company name. It is a power generation business covering equipment, engineering, EPC and O&M.
Do you only work on Cat equipment?
No. Cat Genset has a Cat focus, but we are brand-agnostic and support every major engine make.
Can you add a gas turbine to a Cat plant?
Yes. We design the electrical integration and can offer new or surplus turbines, including FX-45 slots from 2028.
