Cat Genset Metering Path to GT

You sell, share or account for power from your Cat gensets, and every number you report depends on a meter someone installed years ago. When a lender, a host customer or a compute tenant questions the figures, you need more than a spreadsheet to answer.

As gas turbines join the fleet, poor metering becomes a real risk: disputed invoices, fuel you cannot reconcile, performance claims nobody trusts and protection events you cannot reconstruct. Lost confidence in your data quickly becomes lost revenue and delayed payments.

USP&E as Your Guide to Metering You Can Defend

Voltage difference, slip frequency, phase angle and dead-bus logic decide whether Cat gensets and gas turbines can share a bus safely. Turbines have different inertia and governor response, so the sync-check relay settings that suit a 2 MW genset will not automatically suit a large turbine. Your studies should confirm closing windows for every machine and every bus configuration you intend to run.

Decide Who Has to Trust Your Numbers

Metering decides who trusts the numbers, so start by listing every party that reads them: your finance team, a host customer, a utility, a lender’s engineer or a future tenant. Each one may require a different accuracy class, a sealed meter, an independent check meter or a specific data format. Write those requirements down before you buy instrument transformers.

Then map the metering points: each generator terminal, the station auxiliary supply, every outgoing feeder and the point of delivery. Revenue meters belong where energy changes hands, while generator meters support fuel reconciliation and performance tracking. Mixing the two roles in one meter is a common source of later disputes.

Specify CTs, VTs and Meters to the Right Class

Current and voltage transformers set the ceiling on your accuracy. Specify the accuracy class, burden and ratio for metering cores separately from protection cores, and keep test certificates with the as-built file. When Cat gensets and gas turbine generators share a switchboard, check that each incomer has its own metering-grade cores.

Commission meters with secondary injection and a site comparison against a calibrated reference, then seal them and record the seal numbers. Plan recalibration intervals in the maintenance system. Natural gas engines and turbines also need fuel metering that matches the electrical data, so heat input and energy out can be reconciled every month.

Secure Data Paths and Plan for Turbine Growth

Your meters are only useful if the data reaches the right people intact. Use a dedicated metering network or VLAN, time-synchronise every device, keep raw interval data and restrict who can change configuration. Basic cyber hygiene, such as changing default passwords and logging access, protects both revenue and protection records.

AI campuses rarely pause for tidy cutovers. Temporary Cat genset paralleling must therefore remain stable while gas turbine generators are installed, fuel trains are flushed, and protection settings are proven. A written freeze window, a rollback plan, and named owners for every breaker reduce the chance that a partial sync attempt becomes a multi-hour outage for compute halls.

Your path from first call to reliable power

When owners ask whether to scrap working Cat genset islands to “make room” for GT generators, the answer is usually no. Strand the pad template, not the working recip assets. Re-site or re-role packages for construction temporary power, camp nodes, and diesel contingency while GT blocks carry firm megawatts on gas.

  1. Export Cat genset meter and fuel histories and map which feeders will move to gas turbine generators.
  2. Document the metering register, historian rules, time sync, cyber segregation, and O&M owners in one matrix.
  3. Complete permits, funding, fuel agreements, and metering reconciliation tests before final equipment selection.

Common questions

Why does metering matter when Cat gensets move toward gas turbines?

USP&E treats metering as part of the power station because invoices, fuel reconciliation and performance claims all depend on it. When gas turbines join a Cat genset fleet, new incomers and feeders change the energy flows, so meters and instrument transformers must be reviewed before anyone signs a sale or tenancy agreement.

What accuracy class should revenue meters use?

USP&E sets the accuracy class from the contract and the parties who read the data, not from habit. Revenue meters at the point of delivery usually need a higher class and dedicated metering cores, while generator meters support fuel and performance tracking and can follow the station’s operational requirements.

How should metering data be protected?

USP&E recommends a dedicated metering network, time synchronisation, restricted configuration access and retained raw interval data. Changing default passwords, logging every access and backing up configurations protects both revenue records and protection event data, so a disputed figure can always be traced back to its source.

Do natural gas engines need separate fuel metering?

USP&E recommends fuel metering on each natural gas engine or engine group so fuel input can be reconciled with electrical output. Without it, losses, leaks and declining performance hide inside station totals, and you cannot show a customer or lender how efficiently the plant actually runs month by month.
