When gas turbines join that site, the stakes rise. Salt that reaches a turbine compressor causes fouling and corrosion that cut output and can damage blades. If you carry your current habits into the new plant, you risk lost capacity, early overhauls and unplanned outages that a coastal site can least afford.
USP&E Helps You Beat Coastal Corrosion From Cat Gensets to GT
USP&E is not a Caterpillar dealer, but we have supported many coastal and island plants where salt and humidity were the main enemy. USP&E brings 150+ power projects in 45+ countries and 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and our 400+ engineers and project managers survey corrosion, specify protection and plan O&M so gas turbine generators and existing gensets both last on coastal sites. We work under ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified systems with FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.
Corrosion is slow until it is suddenly expensive. A clear survey of what the salt has already done, and a specification that stops it doing the same to new equipment, protects your capacity for years.
Survey What the Salt Has Already Done
Walk each of your Cat gensets with your maintenance team and record corrosion on the enclosure, doors and seals, radiator cores and fins, exhaust and silencer, fasteners, cable glands and electrical panels. Photograph each finding so you can track it over time and show where money must be spent.
Record the site exposure too: distance to the shoreline, prevailing wind direction, humidity, fog and how often salt spray reaches the plant. Your sets on the windward side often corrode much faster than those sheltered behind buildings, and that pattern should guide where new equipment goes.
Fix the worst damage first. Radiators that leak, panels with failing seals and corroded earthing connections are direct threats to availability and safety. Sealing panels, adding filtered ventilation or anti-condensation heaters, and replacing badly corroded fasteners are quick, practical wins.
Specify Protection for New Gas Turbine Packages
Write coastal protection into your turbine specification from the start. Ask for coatings suited to marine exposure, corrosion-resistant fasteners and fittings, sealed electrical enclosures and stainless or protected materials where salt and moisture collect. Adding them after delivery costs more and works less well.
Inlet filtration matters most. A coastal turbine needs filters that remove salt aerosols and water droplets before air reaches the compressor, often with weather hoods, coalescing stages and high-efficiency final filters. Ask the supplier how the filter house drains water and how filter condition is monitored.
Think about the whole package. Enclosure ventilation, lube oil coolers, fin-fan coolers, cable trays and the step-up transformer all face the same salt. Each needs a protection plan, or the weakest item will set your outage schedule.
Keep Corrosion Under Control in O&M
Add corrosion checks to your routine rounds for both gensets and turbines. Look at coatings, seals, filters and electrical connections on a fixed schedule, and record findings in the CMMS so trends show up before parts fail. Fresh water rinsing of exposed surfaces can help where the supplier allows it.
Track inlet filter pressure drop and compressor performance on the turbines. Rising pressure drop, falling output or frequent compressor washing are early signs that salt is getting through. Act on those signs instead of waiting for the next inspection.
Coastal campuses for compute face the same salt. Under hyperscale EPC/O&M, teams protect AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute with marine-grade filtration and coatings, and New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA can be specified the same way for shoreline sites. Your natural gas engines/stations, a remanufactured GE Frame 6B and verified used/new gas turbines all need that discipline too.
Global Offices Behind Your Cat Genset Programme
Your plant does not run on head-office time. USP&E anchors your Cat genset switchgear and GT campus expansion in Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) and Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock), where engineering, project controls and commissioning support sit, close to the African sites USP&E has powered for years.
When paralleling switchgear, Cat gensets and gas turbine packages must be financed, sourced or shipped, London (162-168 Regent Street) structures contracts and finance, Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700) reach US equipment supply, and Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) supports China supply chain and manufacturing.
For coastal Cat genset sites, Cape Town and Johannesburg engineers can survey salt damage with your crew, then specify turbine coatings, inlet filters and enclosure protection that suit your exposure. Regions served: USA | AFRICA | UK | UAE | CHINA. One accountable team behind 150+ power projects in 45+ countries and 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified.

HowTo: Control Coastal Corrosion from Cat Gensets to GT
Your 3-step plan: 1. Share photos, maintenance records and site exposure details under NDA. 2. Receive a corrosion survey, repair priorities and a turbine protection specification. 3. Repair, specify and protect, then track corrosion under accountable O&M.
- Survey corrosion on each Cat genset: enclosure, radiator cores, exhaust, fasteners and electrical panels.
- Record the site exposure: distance to the sea, prevailing wind, humidity and fog.
- Fix the worst damage first and protect panels from salt and moisture.
- Specify coatings, materials and enclosure protection for new gas turbine packages.
- Specify inlet filtration that removes salt and water before air reaches the compressor.
- Add corrosion checks and filter condition to routine O&M rounds.

FAQ: Cat Genset Coastal Corrosion Path to GT
Is USP&E a Caterpillar dealer?
USP&E is not a Caterpillar dealer. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor that helps you protect Cat gensets and new gas turbines on coastal sites, with one team responsible for the survey, the specification, the installation and the maintenance that follows.
How does salt air damage gas turbines?
USP&E sees salt aerosols foul and corrode turbine compressors when inlet filtration is weak. Deposits reduce airflow and output, and corrosion can pit blades and shorten their life. Salt also attacks enclosures, coolers and electrical panels, so your whole package needs protection on a coastal site.
What inlet filtration suits a coastal turbine?
USP&E usually recommends weather hoods, moisture separation or coalescing stages and high-efficiency final filters for coastal turbines. The aim is to stop salt and water before they reach the compressor. You should also ask how the filter house drains and how pressure drop is monitored.
What quick fixes help corroded Cat gensets?
USP&E often starts with sealing electrical panels, adding anti-condensation heaters, replacing corroded fasteners and earthing connections, and repairing leaking radiators. These practical steps protect availability and safety while you plan bigger repairs or replacements for the worst affected sets on your site.
Where are USP&E’s offices that support coastal sites?
USP&E supports coastal sites from Cape Town and Johannesburg, where mechanical and O&M engineers can survey your gensets and plan protection. London covers contracts and finance, Colorado Springs and Knoxville support turbine supply and engineering, and Wuxi follows up coatings and packages made in China.
Has USP&E delivered power in harsh conditions before?
USP&E supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania. Public case studies also cover Kinross at Tasiast in Mauritania, where USP&E supplied and installed a backup power station of low-hour Cat gensets with new switchgear. You can read each case study.
Is USP&E a broker for coastal power equipment?
USP&E is not a broker. USP&E engineers, supplies, installs and maintains power plants with its own people, so the team that writes your corrosion specification is the same team that installs the equipment and answers for how it lasts in salt air.
How fast can USP&E respond to a corrosion survey request?
USP&E can start reviewing your photos, maintenance records and site exposure details as soon as you share them under NDA. Engineers flag the items that threaten availability or safety first, then plan a site survey around access and your running schedule.
Keep Salt Out of Your Power Plant
Plan for salt and your gensets and turbines hold their output and last their full life. Ignore it and corrosion steals capacity, forces early overhauls and causes outages. USP&E will help you survey, specify and protect with confidence.
