Cat Genset Fuel Quality to GT
Your Cat gensets have probably tolerated fuel that a gas turbine will not. Diesel engines cope with some water and particles because their filters and injectors are built for it. When liquid-fuel turbines join the same bus and the same tanks, that tolerance becomes a trip risk at the fuel nozzles.
If you feed turbines from the same day tanks without tightening limits, you risk blocked filters, damaged nozzles, failed starts and a forced outage during your first peak. Fixing it after the turbines arrive costs you downtime and schedule you cannot recover.
USP&E Helps You Carry Fuel Quality into Turbines
You have kept your Cat gensets running on the fuel you can get, and that is real skill. USP&E is not a Caterpillar dealer; we engineer the bridge from your genset fleet to turbines. USP&E has delivered 150+ power projects in 45+ countries, with 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and our 400+ engineers and project managers design fuel systems, treatment and O&M for mixed engine and turbine plants on that bridge. We work under ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified systems with FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.
Sample the Fuel You Store Today
Sample every day tank and bulk tank from the bottom, middle and top. Test for free water, particles and microbial growth. Bottom samples matter most, because water and sludge settle there and feed straight into suction lines when levels drop.
Log the results against delivery batches, so you know whether contamination arrives with the tanker or grows in storage. That tells you whether to fix the supplier, the tanks or both.
Check tank vents, breathers and drains too. A missing desiccant breather or a drain valve that nobody opens will keep putting water back in, whatever polishing you buy.
Write Turbine Limits, Not Diesel Limits
Map every header that will also feed liquid-fuel trains on your gas turbine generators. Then write cleanliness and water limits for that path that meet the turbine OEM fuel specification. Those limits are usually tighter than diesel practice, and your shared tanks must meet the stricter of the two.
Add filtration and coalescing at the turbine boundary so you have a final barrier, with differential pressure alarms that operators can see. Quarantine failed batches instead of blending them down and hoping, and flush contaminated lines before new machines are connected.
Plan Polishing Cover and Grow on One Spine
Fuel polishing and tank cleaning take time and sometimes take a tank out of service. Plan cover while it runs: natural gas engines/stations or a remanufactured GE Frame 6B can carry load, and verified used/new gas turbines can bridge a longer cleaning programme.
Trend filter differentials and sample results after turbines join, and keep acceptance tests for each delivery in the CMMS. A rising differential is often your first sign that tank hygiene is slipping again.
If your site later adds compute or data-centre load, this fuel spine scales with it. AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute need the same clean-fuel discipline, and blocks such as the New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA can be added under one hyperscale EPC/O&M team.
USP&E Teams Behind Your Cat Genset Site
Remote sites need people who know frontier work. USP&E runs your Cat genset switchgear and GT campus expansion from Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) and Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock), where engineers plan mobilisation, spares and site supervision for projects far from the nearest service shop.
Further back in the chain, London (162-168 Regent Street) handles financing and contract structure for paralleling switchgear, Cat gensets and gas turbine packages; Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700) secure US equipment, parts and engineering support; and Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) keeps Chinese-made switchgear and balance-of-plant moving.
For fuel quality on a Cat genset bus, Johannesburg and Cape Town crews can sample your tanks and headers on site, while Wuxi supports filtration skid supply when polishing upgrades are needed. Regions served: USA | AFRICA | UK | UAE | CHINA. That team has carried 150+ power projects in 45+ countries and 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified.
Proof from Recent Cat Genset Projects

FAQ: Cat Genset Fuel Quality to GT
Why can turbines not use the same fuel quality as Cat gensets?
USP&E finds that liquid-fuel turbines have tighter water and particle limits than diesel engines. Contamination your gensets tolerate can block turbine filters, damage nozzles and cause failed starts. Shared tanks must meet the stricter turbine limit, or you carry trip risk every time you fire.
Where should you sample stored fuel?
USP&E samples the bottom, middle and top of every day tank and bulk tank. Bottom samples matter most because water and sludge settle there. You log results against delivery batches so you know whether the problem comes from the tanker or from storage.
What should happen to a fuel batch that fails the limit?
USP&E quarantines failed batches rather than blending them down. You polish or reject the fuel, flush any contaminated lines and only then reconnect the turbine path. Blending hides the problem until a filter blocks during a start or a peak.
Is USP&E a Caterpillar dealer?
USP&E is not a Caterpillar dealer. We engineer the bridge from your Cat genset fleet to gas turbine generators, including fuel systems, filtration and controls. We stay accountable through commissioning and O&M instead of selling engine parts, so your fuel advice is not tied to a parts counter.
Where are USP&E’s offices for fuel quality projects?
USP&E anchors fuel quality work in Johannesburg and Cape Town, close to your tanks, headers and site crews. London structures contracts and finance, Colorado Springs and Knoxville reach US equipment supply, and Wuxi supports China supply chain and manufacturing. Every office works from the same project file.
Has USP&E delivered genset and turbine fuel systems before?
USP&E supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania. Public case studies also include Kinross and Barrick, where accountable EPC and O&M kept fuel systems and firm power reliable. You can read each case study and judge the evidence yourself.
Is USP&E a broker for fuel treatment equipment?
USP&E is not a broker. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor that engineers, supplies, builds, commissions and operates power plants with its own engineers and project managers, so the team that sets your fuel limits also answers for them once turbines run. You deal with one accountable team from first review to O&M.
How fast can USP&E respond to a fuel quality review?
USP&E can start reviewing your sample results, delivery records and fuel P&ID as soon as you share them under NDA. Engineers flag the tanks and headers with the highest turbine risk first, then issue limits and a flushing plan, with timing set by data quality and site access.
